Short Term Experience in Mission – an Alternative Spring Break Retreat

The Alternative Spring Break Retreat

We all know what the cliche High School spring break experience is supposed to look like: a warm beach, a lot of money down the drain, and foggy memories.  If that’s your thing, we hope you enjoy your time.  But if you’re a 9th-12th grader from Syracuse, Utica, Rome, or the surrounding areas who wants to do something a little more meaningful with your time, read on.

From April 10th-April 13th, Vanderkamp is working with King of Kings Lutheran Church in Liverpool to offer a Short Term Experience in Mission – an alternative Spring break retreat designed to help fill your Spring break with meaningful experiences, new friends, and personal growth. It doesn’t matter what denomination of Christian you are, we’d love to welcome to you on this trip with us!

We’ll start by getting to know each other at Vanderkamp on the 10th, and from there we’ll head to Schoharie County to help some people there who are still in dire need of assistance after the flooding last year.  Inspired by a broadcast from YNN in Syracuse, we have decided that one needn’t leave Central New York to find people in need. When New Orleans was ravaged by hurricane Katrina, citizens of the United States responded with countless dollars and work hours. When central New York had its infrastructure destroyed last year, the response across the US paled in comparison.

At Vanderkamp, we feel its our duty to assist our brothers and sisters that are in dire need of help right here in our backyard.  We hope that you’ll join us in taking a retreat from the rest of your life to both physically help and raise awareness for those people who are still coping with gutted houses and basements full of mud.  Partner with us to show Christ-like love to people who are close by and desperately need our help.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never been to summer camp at Vanderkamp before, this is a huge opportunity to help those in need and have a meaningful experience yourself. Please come join us and reflect on how blessed we are that God has given us the opportunity to help our neighbors in need.

We’re working with sponsors to help subsidize our costs as well, so it will cost just $75 per person to attend.  $75 is less than the gas you’d need to reach a warm beach this time of year!
